Qian Hong-Yang, the Girl on the basketball

MBL first heard about Qian Hong-Yan’s plight in the Metro, published on 11 March 2005. Everyone working in the London office was touched after reading the article and wanted to do something for her, so when Xinran visited China in April she decided to find out how MBL can best help Hong-Yan.

Since the publication of the article, Qian Hong-Yan has received surgery which is good news which means she is no longer attached to a basketball. However, her road to recovery will not take one surgery but multiple surgeries and after meeting her in person, Xinran who was deeply moved by her positive attitude decided to select Qian Hong-Yan as ‘MBL Supports Chinese Girls’ 2005 project.

Here’s what MBL would like to do with funds raised for Qian Hong-Yan:

  • Health Support – Further corrective surgeries [In discussion with Beijing Health and Care Centre]

  • Education Support –Give her access to knowledge through technology by purchasing a laptop for her [Done]

  • Life Development and Opportunity Support –Support from Western families through communications, financial and moral support [MBL in process of getting support from Western families]

Qian Hong-Yan is learning to stand after five-year’s sitting on basketball ….

A promise made between Xinran (MBL) and Hong-Yan for a brighter future…

  • Best Friends: Hongyan and Alice

‘I want to be your best friend, I want to play with you, study with you and read with you, when we are free, we can have a chat, …we can tell each other the happiest or saddest things of our own.’

Hongyan wrote this in her first letter to Alice. We can see from her simple language that Hongyan is longing for friendship and that she wants help to overcome her unfortunate circumstances. Hongyan’s friendship with Alice started last October, when Alice heard of Hongyan’s story from a local magazine and she started to write to Hongyan.

After having written several letters to Hongyan, Alice decided to save her pocket money to send some gifts to her. Just in case Hongyan could not receive her gifts, Alice’s mother - Lesley and MBL's Volunteer, a warm hearted girl in Beijing- ChenYang Wang kept emailing each other to ensure Alice’s gift to reach Hongyan.

The two little girls’ friendship has built up with the help of Alice’s mother - Lesley and Chenyang . In order to help these two girls, Alice’s mother Lesley and Chengyang are just like a bridge to convey the two girls' news. Alice was eager to receive any news from Hongyan, and she was very proud of being Hongyang’s friend; while Hongyan also told many people about her little English friend.

When Christmas was coming Alice thought even more about Hongyan, so she started to collect some gifts to send to her. Alice carefully put some money into a red packet in her second parcel for Hongyan for the Chinese Spring festival, as she knew this is the Chinese New year’s custom. The big parcel reached Hongyan safely through Chengyang’s effort. Hongyan and her family were very grateful. A small scarf from Alice warmed Hongyang not only in her body but also in her heart. In her childlike innocent way, Hongyang said she liked the pencils from Alice in particular (even though she could have bought many more pencils with the money that had been sent).

Maybe these small gifts are common things in most children’s daily lives, but they are very precious to Hongyan. It is not only a gift but also a spiritual encouragement, which brings her hope in her life because she knows there are so many people who care about her and would like to help her. The road of Hongyan’s life is still very long and difficult, and she needs more help and care from many people. Let us help her to grow up healthy and happy!

Two months after Hong-Yan left CRRC, MBL was so delighted to get the first email from Hong-Yan, which she typed by herself using the laptop donated by MBL. Here is what she said in her email in Chinese:

欣然阿姨您好:

我现在就是用您们送给我的电脑在网络上以E-mail的形式向您问好我现在用的是拨号上网,宽带虽然接通了,但没有用上,所以上网有些不方便,我想请阿姨向云南省电信公司申请为我提供一个免费的宽带平台,有利以我充分掌握利用网络资源.我非常盼望能与您们经常沟通!

爱您们的小红艳

Dear Aunt Xinran,

I am now saying Hello on the web in this E-mail using the laptop you gave me. Now I am using dial-up to get connected, although the broadband is connected as well, but it doesn't work now, so its a bit inconvenient to get online. I'd like to ask Aunt Xinran to give me a free broadband plan from Yunnan Telecommunication company so that I can get the most from the Internet resource. I am looking forward to communicating with you often.

Love,

Little Hong-Yan

And also, this is what Xinran wrote her back, in Chinese as well:

亲爱的小红艳:

Thank you!

Thank you for your email. All of us in MBL are waiting for your news anxiously, so you can really imagine how happy we received your words!

Are you alright now? What are you doing now? Do you have any new photos to show us that you are getting prettier?

Because I work in London and am busying interviewing with media from all over the world and telling them about our MBL, I may not reply your email soon. But, Aunt Tong, the director of MBL in Beijing, and Aunt Ping, Aunt Julie and Uncle Leo in Nanjing will help you together. And later, Aunt Meiyee and more people from MBL will come to help you as well.

I am sure Aunt Tong will contact Yunnan Telecommunication company and tell them your situation for a free broadband plan for you.

If you want to know who all these aunts and uncles are, you can see us in www.motherbridge.org. I hope MBL can receive your letter often, now it is in Chinese and soon it will be in English!

  • A new laptop to Hong-Yan - May 2005

At 2:00pm on May the 24th in 2005, MBL and CRRC (China Rehabilitation Research Centre) hold a meeting to say Good-bye to Qian Hong-Yan. When Hong-Yan typed Thank you with the notebook computer that MBL gave her as a gift, all the volunteers present were cheerful. That is because our aim is to help her grow up healthily and happily.

For the sake of a good mental environment, MBL is making a plan for Hong-Yan. It will choose 10 families, half internal and half international, to consist a group to give Hong-Yan favours that she needs. The plan’s first step is a notebook computer. All the volunteers hope it can show Hong-Yan an entire new world, make a bridge between her mother and other mums in MBL and at the same time help her family escape from poverty.

Qian Hong-Yan and her father expressed their appreciation to MBL before leaving. And said they would use this present well.
